"Closing the Literacy Gap" by Teaching English to Adult Learners

Project Light of Manatee Receives $15,000 Bishop-Parker Foundation Grant to Launch “English on the Go”

Project Light of Manatee has received a $15,000 grant from Bishop-Parker Foundation to launch English on the Go: Learning English. Discovering Our Community. The 13-week bilingual radio pilot will bring practical English lessons and community information to adult learners across Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

BRADENTON, FL — September 2026 — Project Light of Manatee is pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant from Bishop-Parker Foundation to launch English on the Go: Learning English. Discovering Our Community, a new 13-week bilingual educational pilot designed to bring practical English learning beyond the traditional classroom.

Also known as “Inglés sobre Ruedas,” the initiative will use Spanish-language radio to reach adults throughout the community who want to improve their English but may face barriers to participating in traditional face-to- face classes. These may include demanding work schedules, transportation challenges, family responsibilities, or simply feeling uncomfortable entering a classroom environment.

Project Light will collaborate with La Zeta and La Número Uno to produce a series of bilingual radio programs combining practical, everyday English with information about local history, community resources, services, and places in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

“English learning should not be limited to the walls of a classroom,” said Elena Farkas, Executive Director of Project Light of Manatee. “There are many adults in our community who want to improve their English but may not be ready or able to attend a traditional class. English on the Go allows us to meet people where they are — at work, in their cars, and at home—and give them an opportunity to learn while also discovering more about
the community in which they live.”

The 13-week pilot reflects Project Light’s mission of “Closing the Literacy Gap by Teaching English to Adult Learners.” Through accessible English instruction and community-based learning, the initiative is intended to help participants develop practical language skills, increase confidence, and strengthen their connection to the communities around them.

Project Light is grateful to Bishop-Parker Foundation for investing in an innovative approach to adult English education and helping the organization expand learning opportunities beyond its existing classrooms.
