Civics is defined as the study of the rights and duties of citizenship, focusing on the role individuals play within their community and government. At Project Light Language, our students explore these ideas in class discussions and projects that connect democratic principles to everyday life.
Key concepts in Civics include democracy, government structure, and individual rights and responsibilities. Other central ideas involve the rule of law, separation of powers, checks and balances, and the importance of civic participation, such as voting and community involvement.
Florida ranks among the nation’s leaders in providing Civics education for its students. Florida requires high school students to pass a U.S. government course to graduate. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Test is necessary for immigrants to obtain American Citizenship. By engaging directly with Civics, Project Light Language students not only prepare for graduation requirements but also gain the tools to become active, thoughtful participants in their communities.
The best way to strengthen our democracy is to teach it.

Great Read on the Power of Civic Engagement
In The New Civic Path, Richard Harwood beautifully highlights the power of civic engagement and the vital role each of us plays in shaping society. Our Executive Director recently had the pleasure of joining The New Civic Path Book Circles, hosted by The Patterson Foundation, where these essential themes came to life over three inspiring Saturday sessions.
During the discussions, participants examined societal beliefs and the importance of bringing together diverse voices to find common ground. This vibrant dialogue echoed Harwood's central message: that fostering community depends on open communication. The event not only deepened our understanding of the book's concepts but also created a valuable forum for local community members to connect and share their insights. By promoting collaborative conversations, the Book Circles underscored our shared commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society.
