September marks the start of National Literacy Month. Project Light’s mission to support adult learners through English proficiency, literacy, citizenship, and employment skill development is particularly crucial.
How does Project Light incorporate Literacy Mosaic in the school’s learning environment?
We provide support to our students in developing English language literacy and proficiency. In our partnership with Manatee and Daughtrey Elementary Schools, Project Light supports community partners in promoting family literacy by offering English language classes for parents. Through the program, our teachers work on cultural literacy by fostering awareness of American culture within thematically organized lessons, while also learning about the diverse cultures of our students.
This school year, Project Light’s curriculum has undergone enhancements. We have incorporated a Workplace Readiness Literacy component into every lesson, focusing on skills that are essential for success in the workplace. Additionally, Financial Literacy has been added to the curriculum through a partnership with Project Prosper, a local nonprofit organization.
Our curriculum and language instructions are designed to empower students. By changing their lives, our students and their families will transform the communities we all belong to. Project Light’s courses incorporate digital components into daily classroom instruction. Our students are provided with digital learning tools that require basic computer skills.
During the summer, we expand the computer lab by purchasing new computers and testing equipment. We thank the Barancik Foundation for its support of these technology enhancements. The upgraded lab provides opportunities to administer testing and digital literacy simultaneously in all classrooms.
