Closing the Literacy Gap" by Teaching English to Adult Learners

Lidis Cuenca: From Learning to Teaching

At Project Light Language School, we are joyfully celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. This month is an opportunity to honor the rich culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. In this spirit, we are featuring Lidis Cuenca, whose story is particularly meaningful to us. Lidis was once a student at our school and later returned as a teacher. She exemplifies the valuable connection between our alumni and current students, sharing her knowledge and experiences with the next generation.

When I first joined Project Light, I was searching for more than English lessons. I was looking for confidence, for connection, and for a way to integrate into the community I now call home. What I found was a place that offered much more than grammar and vocabulary—it offered hope, encouragement, and a family of people walking the same path.

As an alumna, I can say that Project Light helped me discover my voice. It gave me the courage to stand in front of others, to share my story, and to believe that my dreams were still possible, no matter my age or the obstacles I had faced.

I was also blessed with wonderful mentors along the way. Charlie Cunningham, my Level 4 teacher, not only guided me in class but also helped me prepare for a job interview and supported me in finding my first job in the United States. Elena Farkas encouraged me to write my resume and gave me references for my applications, opening doors I never thought possible. Tatiana Artemyeva, with her patience and kindness, reminded me that learning can be both effective and full of warmth. And my last teacher, Grace, made me love every lesson because of the special connection she created with our group. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed, supported, and deeply cared for.

Today, I continue to grow professionally and personally, but I always carry with me the lessons I learned at Project Light: perseverance, gratitude, and the importance of supporting others. To every student: keep moving forward. And to the teachers, staff, and volunteers—thank you for believing in us when we sometimes struggle to believe in ourselves.
