"Closing the Literacy Gap" by Teaching English to Adult Learners

School Rules and Regulations

Effective Date: April 2025
Last updated: October 2026

School year and registration process

The school year begins in August and ends in May. Project Light Language School has general registration for a new school year in July. The school also has ongoing registration for people who want to enroll in classes throughout the school year.  When a student enrolls later in the school year, he/she will be placed in a class that started in August. This placement is based on his/her English placement test results, ensuring a fair and appropriate learning environment for each student.

Class placement

Based on the placement test results, the school enrolls students in a Core English language class according to proficiency level. We offer face-to-face morning classes 9 -11 am and evening classes 6:30-8:00pm twice weekly. The school provides textbooks and materials for the class. Additionally, the students get an online reading program account to listen to and read books outside of the classroom settings. The students must use all components of the English course throughout the school year.

Fees and Costs

The annual registration fee is $50.00/year, the Core English course costs $200.00/year, the elective courses $100/semester. This cost is based on the course material and is the same regardless of the enrollment date. Students pay once per school year.

Once enrolled, the school provides students with English textbooks and an online reading program account. Students also get a folder, notebook, and writing supplies. If students lose one of the textbooks, they pay a $35.00 replacement fee for a new one.

If you are interested only in the Citizenship Course, the registration fee is $ 50.00, and the course cost is $ 50.00.

The payment is collected at the time of the interview and class placement in school. The payment options are cash, Zelle with no fees, or credit or debit cards with 3% transaction fee.

Class Attendance

Students must attend classes regularly and arrive 10–15 minutes before class begins.

If you cannot attend class, send a text message to (772) 361-8872. Include your name, your teacher’s name, and the date of your absence. Contact the school as soon as you know you will miss class.

Excused Absences

An absence is excused when the student contacts the school about the absence. Students who contact the school may remain enrolled during an absence of up to three consecutive weeks. After three consecutive weeks of absence, the school will withdraw the student from the class and place the student ON HOLD in the enrollment system.

Unexcused Absences

An absence is unexcused when the student does not contact the school. If the student is absent for two consecutive weeks without contacting the school, the school will withdraw the student from the class.

Individual Learning Plan During a Prolonged Absence

Students who want to return to the same class after an absence of three weeks or more must continue studying during their absence and follow their Individual Learning Plan.

Individual Learning Plan (ILP)

Students should follow the pace of their class as closely as possible;

  • study textbook lessons;
  • complete workbook exercises;
  • read books on Kids A-Z;
  • reviewing vocabulary and grammar.

Returning to Class and Re-Enrollment

A student placed ON HOLD is no longer actively enrolled in the class but retains ON HOLD status for that class during the current school year. To return, the student must formally request re-enrollment by contacting the school office at (772) 361-8872.

Students returning after an absence of three weeks or more must present completed textbook and workbook exercises, demonstrate understanding of the missed material, and receive approval from the Executive Director before returning to class.

Returning to the same class depends on satisfactory academic progress and the availability of a seat. If the class is full, a student will be placed on the waiting list or offered another class if one is available. An excused absence does not guarantee re-enrollment.

Continuing Your English Studies

If you are unable to attend in-person classes, the school encourages you to continue studying English independently. You can use your textbooks and read books on Kids A-Z to maintain and improve your English skills.

Your Kids A-Z account will remain available until the end of the school year in May. However, if your account is inactive for 30 consecutive days, it may be deactivated. To restore access, please contact the school.

Class Conduct

  • You cannot use your cell phone during class unless a teacher permits it for educational purposes such as games, dictionaries, or project preparation. You can use your phone before class and during breaks to check messages, make calls, and access your English accounts. If you do not follow this rule, your phone may be taken for the rest of the class.
  • You should follow your teacher’s instructions and show respect to your teachers and classmates. Our teachers are volunteers who spend their time and knowledge helping you learn.
  • Our school does not require uniforms, but you should wear neat, clean, and appropriate clothing. Please do not wear strong perfumes or fragrances.
  • Homework is a mandatory part of learning. If students do not complete assigned homework, it will impact their progress, and the school may need to address their overall class participation.
  • Our school is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, racial discrimination, and the use of drugs and alcohol. Your safety and well-being are very important to us.

Parking

If you drive a car, you must possess a valid driver’s license. The school’s parking permit must be clearly displayed in your vehicle when parked in the school’s parking lot.

Learning Progress Assessment

The school conducts regular unit tests to evaluate students’ progress and gather information that guides support for improving language proficiency. We will also administer English language proficiency tests to assess growth in reading and listening skills, along with collecting data on individual language development and attendance.

Certificates

Project Light Language School provides an educational environment to improve English skills. Students who meet the criteria of 80% attendance and complete all units and tests will receive a Certificate of Completion. Others will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Learning a language requires commitment and discipline, which are crucial for employment and career development. The Executive Director supports students’ career goals by offering reference letters based on their academic performance.
