Closing the Literacy Gap" by Teaching English to Adult Learners

Board of Directors

CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM

Board Member (Emeritus)

Charlie, a veteran of 45 years in the federal government and private sector, joined Project Light in 2016. His extensive experience in various analytical, managerial, and executive-level positions now benefits Project Light as a volunteer. In his roles as a teacher and a member of the Board of Directors, Charlie effectively promotes Project Light’s vision of integrating adult English language learners into the community’s economic, educational, and social fabric. His strong belief in the transformative power of English drives his work, as he sees it as a tool for the underserved to help themselves.

Charlie wears many hats as a Project Light volunteer. First and foremost, he serves as an Advanced English instructor. He instills in his student’s competence and confidence in their learning of English so that they can better contribute to their community and their families. He also developed and teaches an eight-week Citizenship Program designed for students who wish to become U.S. citizens.  During his three-year term as Chairman of the Board Directors, his leadership ensured that the school remained open and safe for students during the COVID-19 turmoil; outreach, fundraising, and board member participation increased dramatically; student enrollment more than doubled; and the Project Light building received a much-needed facelift both internally and externally.
