Student Placement

After initial assessment, each new student is placed in a group. There are three gropus at Project Light. Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. All classes use the textbook, Side by Side, which is recommended for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Beginners

Book One teaches: Alphabet, numbers, classroom objects, family, weather, daily activities and other practical topics. Students learn to use verbs in present and past tense. Supplements and phonics are also included.

Intermediate

Book Two starts with a review of verb tenses, parts of speech and functional literacy to enable students to function in their community.

Advanced

Book three: More advanced usage of parts of speech. Emphasis on more advanced functional literacy. Current events are included in this class.

Our students received certificates at a ceremony at the Project Light School. The celebration included Chris MacCormack, Program Director leading the students in singing the song "This Land Is Your Land". It also included speeches by various students, including Maria Elena Royett, from Venezuela, who bikes about 15 miles each way to school every day she has classes. The ceremony also included a speech by Board President Guy Larreur, who knows the difficulty of arriving to America without English knowledge.
